Why We Need EMS Data Systems

There are multiple reasons for collecting data in order to guide EMS/C practice.

The Need for Data

The need for data in making decisions that objectively guide EMS/C practice and promote enhanced patient outcomes is crucial, and is well summarized by the following quote from the Institute of Medicine’s 1993 report on EMSC:

Institute of Medicine Logo“Without a broad and reliable base of information, it is hard for anyone—emergency care providers, administrators, parents, policymakers—to determine in any systematic way how successful EMSC systems are in providing appropriate, timely care or what they ought to do to improve performance and patient outcomes.” 1

Reasons to Collect Data

The reasons for collecting data in EMS/C are many including:

  • For reimbursement purposes
  • To serve as legal documentation of services provided
  • To understand the magnitude of EMS calls and overall demand on the system
  • To make informed requests for additional funding or resources
  • To secure grant money
  • To assess training needs
  • To determine compliance with established protocol
  • And ultimately to enhance patient care and drive quality improvement
