There are multiple reasons for collecting data in order to guide EMS/C practice.
The need for data in making decisions that objectively guide EMS/C practice and promote enhanced patient outcomes is crucial, and is well summarized by the following quote from the Institute of Medicine’s 1993 report on EMSC:
“Without a broad and reliable base of information, it is hard for anyone—emergency care providers, administrators, parents, policymakers—to determine in any systematic way how successful EMSC systems are in providing appropriate, timely care or what they ought to do to improve performance and patient outcomes.” 1
